Hopedene, Slate Roof Replacement

Newport, Rhode Island, 1889-1902

Hopedene Historic Preservation Project – Newport, RI

Hopedene is one of Newport’s most celebrated Gilded Age estates, a grand oceanfront mansion that exemplifies the opulence and architectural sophistication of the late 19th century. Designed by Peabody & Stearns, this iconic property is admired for its sweeping rooflines, intricate detailing, and commanding views of the Atlantic. Our team was honored to contribute to the preservation of this landmark, ensuring its elegance and structural integrity endure for generations.

The project focused on restoring critical exterior elements, including the original slate roofing and copper details, while maintaining harmony with the estate’s historic design. Every aspect of the work was guided by a commitment to authenticity—employing traditional craftsmanship and historically accurate materials while integrating modern solutions for durability in Newport’s harsh coastal climate.

Unique Challenges & Solutions

Preserving Hopedene presented several challenges. The property’s exposure to salt air, high winds, and seasonal temperature fluctuations had caused significant deterioration of roofing and metalwork. To address this, we sourced premium slate and corrosion-resistant copper to replicate the original aesthetic while ensuring long-term performance. The complex roof geometry and ornate architectural details demanded precision installation and careful coordination among trades. Additionally, strict preservation guidelines required balancing historical accuracy with modern protective measures, ensuring the structure remains resilient without compromising its architectural integrity.
